The mission of the U.S. Army First Radiological Support Unit was to provide support to the Armed Forces Special Weapons Projects and the Joint Task Forces during atomic test operations. To perform this mission the unit was authorized 12 officers and 77 enlisted men. The unit was commanded by a nuclear effects engineer Major Fred E. Rosell, U.S. Army Chemical Corps. The unit was organized on a two platoon system as follows. Commanding Officer Operations Platoon - Logistics Platoon Monitoring Section - Instruments Section Plotting Section - Supply Section Decontamination Section - Dosimetry Section The First Radiological Support Unit provided support for Operation Plumbob in Nevada during the summer of 1957 and Operation Hardtack in the Marshall Islands in the summer of 1958. Other operations were supported also but this web site is dedicated to the time frame from 1956 - 1958 |
